What is Azure Cloud Adoption Framework?
As of my last update in September 2021, the Azure Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) is a comprehensive guide provided by Microsoft to help organizations successfully adopt and implement Azure cloud services. The framework offers a structured approach and best practices for planning, designing, and implementing cloud-based solutions.
Using CAF terraform for Azure landing zones by Roman Burdiuzha:
The primary goal of the Azure CAF is to assist businesses in their cloud journey while addressing various aspects of cloud adoption, such as governance, security, compliance, cost management, and operational excellence. It provides a set of guidelines, tools, and resources that help organizations align their business objectives with the capabilities of Azure cloud services.
The Azure CAF typically consists of six main areas:
Strategy
Defining business objectives and identifying workloads suitable for the cloud. This step helps organizations outline their cloud adoption plan and set key performance indicators (KPIs) for measuring success.
Plan
Creating a detailed plan for executing the cloud adoption strategy. This involves identifying stakeholders, establishing governance policies, and setting up a team to oversee the migration process.
Ready
Ensuring technical and organizational readiness for the cloud migration. Assessing existing infrastructure, addressing skill gaps, and preparing the necessary resources and tools.
Migrate
Executing the migration plan by moving workloads and applications to Azure. This step includes various migration strategies, such as lift-and-shift, re-platforming, and re-architecting.
Innovate
Encouraging innovation and optimization of cloud resources. This involves leveraging Azure’s advanced capabilities, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and Internet of Things (IoT), to drive business innovation.
Govern
Establishing governance and management practices to maintain control and compliance in the cloud environment. This step includes setting up policies, monitoring performance, and ensuring security.
It’s important to note that Microsoft may have updated or expanded the Azure Cloud Adoption Framework since my last update in September 2021. For the most current information and resources, I recommend checking the official Microsoft Azure documentation.
